groundwork
"We began to recollect we could piece of work on the radio. The three singles from Sons And Fascination had got somewhere between twoscore and sixty, and in those days you needed to be in the Top 30 to get a slot on Top Of The Pops. ... No-one was doing conventional pop songs. Information technology was distilled from their ain affair. So we thought, we actually accept to accept a vocal like that. And Miracle was what emerged. - Jim Kerr, Uncut Magazine, February 2013"Our showtime real striking and this gave united states of america a sense we were on our way." - Charlie, 24th March 2015
Derek recalled that the band decided they needed to accept a hitting. Talking to Retropopic in 2018, he said "We got to a indicate where nosotros said 'We're going to need a hit. Nosotros're going to have to go on Top Of The Pops.' And so one nighttime, in a place called Westward Runton Pavillion - it's near Newcastle - we said 'We demand to write something. Is there whatever way we tin put a single out earlier nosotros practise an anthology?' And the manager said 'I don't see why not.' And that'south when Promised You A Miracle came in." Unfortunately the ring didn't play the Due west Runton Pavillion during the first leg of the Sons And Fascination tour, leaving the location and fourth dimension of this band decision slightly vague.
The inspiration for the new song came from new drummer Kenny Hyslop afterwards on the same tour. He would tape local radio stations on his walkman, especially those playing megamixes and the new house music. Whilst in New York, he recorded a song which would inspire the band's side by side single. "I tuned into this long megamix on Buss FM and a track called 'Too Through' by Bad Girls came on. I liked the audio of it then I pressed tape and play, and quickly fell in love with it. Eventually, halfway through the tour Jim asked 'What's that thing you lot keep listening to on your Walkman?'" - Kenny Hyslop, Uncut Magazine, Feb 2013
The whole band were taken by it and started to play effectually with it during a rehersal session between legs of the bout at Rockfield in January 1982. Equally Charlie remembered: "We decided to jam around this affair. We loved the groove and a scrap of the bassline, then Mick MacNeil and I came up with this riff. It was put together without any great thought, information technology came together very easily, very quickly. The writing couldn't take taken more than a couple of days." The middle-8 was written by Derek: "And then that was the wee bit that played from the F to Bb and Eb."
The lyrics also came very quickly. "It was very much instant. The phrase was there. I don't know why, it merely came as a response to the riff. I probably just snatched it from one of my notebooks and it just fitted in terms of rhythm and seemed to go with the experience of the vocal" recalled Jim. "I wanted information technology to be 'Promised Yous A Mackerel'", joked Derek. "We left Jim to the words. He would recognise conversations nosotros'd had, pick things up. His lyrics were not bad at that point. He'd have the tapes away and sit up all night and write lyrics to information technology."
It looks like the ring were only booked into Rockfield to use The Quondam Mill as rehearsal space equally nothing was formally recorded there. Instead they chose to formally demo the song during a Child Jensen session on the 11th February earlier formally recording the track at The Townhouse over the next couple of days (the date on the multi-track is the 12th Feb 1982). Ii stereo takes of the multi-track were mixed down on the 14th February 1982 with the 2nd being selected as the principal, earlier the band took the ferry that evening to continue their Sons And Fascination tour.
So they used their adjacent to formally demo the song.
Just before setting off on the second leg of the Sons And Fascination tour in January 1982, the band were holed up at Rockfield Studios. Promised You A Miracle was recorded in demo form, the idea to return to it when the recording of the new anthology started, simply they couldn't leave it alone, so information technology was polished upward and recorded properly with Pete Walsh in the producers' chair.
It was likewise recorded and released betwixt albums to boost the band's popularity for the rest of the Sons And Fascination tour. They were within touching distance of being able to play bigger venues - and the single did the trick.
Information technology was the only studio recording which featured Kenny Hyslop; he left the group shortly later.
Jim felt it was the kickoff song to express the band's full potential. They knew information technology would be a hit the instant they recorded it.
Released equally a single, Promised Yous A Phenomenon pb to the band's offset U.k. Top-20 striking, and their first advent on Top Of The Pops (with Mike Ogletree at present on drums).
Jim often would introduce the song with "A story of appetite, this is Promised You A Phenomenon."
Derek Forbes overdubbed the bass parts on the live version released on Live In The Urban center Of Lite.
"Nosotros had worked with a drummer then chosen Kenny Hyslop and he was standing in for u.s.. Kenny had worked with Slik and The Zones and he was a lot older than u.s.a.. He was the first guy I knew who was into New York music - I judge information technology was the early rap music, the early on house, the early R&B - and he came back from New York with a cassette of stuff that he'd taped. And one of these things - and we nevertheless don't know what it was - only information technology was this great brass riff. Which we kind of uses every bit a ground for the riff on Promised You A Phenomenon. And, over again, when we'd written it, nosotros thought this is the offset pure popular-vocal nosotros've written, and at the aforementioned time the ambience around - ABC were coming up with popular, Depeche Mode were coming up with pop, The Associates were making this chilling pop, and we felt nosotros had the chance of having our commencement hitting with Miracle. And, indeed, that was to exist the case." - Jim, Sunday Herald interview, 2008.
"To write the lyric for "Promised You A Phenomenon" for instance, I needed non much more a short blast of inspiration to notice some words that could deed in summing up perfectly the positive feel of the music. In addition I needed a melody to dance around the structure. Having grown upward fascinated with pop music, studying it all the fourth dimension - unaware as I did - as a child with imagination, meant I was automatically equipped to write "Miracle" and many other lyrics of a similar nature. More anything what I needed at that place and then equally I attempted to write ourf irst bona-fide hitting song, was to discover something that would strike clearly and was obviously tricky enough to guild in the brain of any casual listeners who came across it on radio. I am not besides modest to say that a expert task was washed, and that was the aforementioned overall opinion from most people around u.s. who afterward their first hearing usually smiled and said "Information technologysouth a striking!"" - Jim, simpleminds.com, 17th January 2010
The song was recorded past Jim and Martha Wainwright in 2010 every bit role of an Oxfam promotional campaign to highlight broken regime promises. Information technology was the showtime vocal produced by Andy Wright and led to him working on Big Music, Acoustic and Walk Between Worlds.
lyrics
Promised you a miracle. Conventionalities is a beauty matter. Promises promises, Equally golden days pause wondering. Chance equally love takes a train. Promised you a miracle. Only love she sees. I promised you a phenomenon. Chance reflects on them a while, Promised you a miracle. Merely dear she sees. Chance lost pearls of great price, I promised you lot a miracle. But dearest she sees. |
